Subject Overview

The Social Personal, and Health (SPHE) programme at The High School directly reflects our ethos which seeks to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of self and other. The SPHE programme supports the personal development, health, and well-being of young people and helps them create and maintain supportive relationships through the development of key skills as part of the overall curriculum. By participating in the SPHE programme pupils will encounter a wide range of issues through a variety of learning experiences.

 Junior Cycle (SPHE)

The ten modules are:

  • Belonging and Integrating
  • Self-management: A sense of purpose
  • Communication Skills
  • Physical Health
  • Friendships
  • Relationships and Sexuality
  • Emotional Health
  • Influences and Decisions
  • Substance Use
  • Personal Safety

Form 4 - Transition Year programme

In Form 4 pupils have one class of SPHE per week as part of the Transition Year programme. The modules covered are:

  • Self-Management
  • Substance Use
  • Assertive Communication
  • Relationship and Sexuality
  • Mental Well Being

Senior Cycle (RSE)

In Forms 5 and 6 pupils receive six classes of Relationship and Sex Education. In Form 5 pupils are taught for RSE during Mathematics while in Form 6 pupils are taught during their V option. The modules covered are:

  • Fertility and Conception
  • Contraception
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Gender Discrimination and Orientation
  • Relationships and Consent
  • Responsible Parenthood
  • Love, Commitment, and Marriage
